Bike Program is Up and Riding

Last week was the first official bike ride for Mary B. Martin’s 8th grade engineering students to MAGNET for STEM programming. This has been a labor of love, which began with Jennie Becker from MAGNET and teacher Jacqueline Vance securing a CMSD Get More Opportunities Grant to purchase 30 bicycles last spring. Then, Ohio City Bicycle Co-op instructors, MAGNET employees, many Mary B. Martin staff volunteers and the 8th graders themselves joined forces to assemble the bikes in September. To ensure safety for all, Bike CLE provided training on safe riding, maneuverability and hand signaling in early October. Finally, the students were ready to ride! With the help of Bike CLE’s Diana Hillebrand, eleven 8th graders biked safely to MAGNET to learn that they will be exhibit consultants for the school year, providing crucial student-centered feedback on all of MAGNET’s new exhibits and programming before opening them up to the public.
