MAGNET’s Community-Focused Center Earns LEED Silver Certification
CLEVELAND, OH [May 31, 2024] - MAGNET is proud to announce that its Manufacturing Innovation, Technology and Job Center has become a leader not only in manufacturing career engagement but also in sustainable design. Hosting over 3,500 students annually through its hands-on Youth Manufacturing Experience, MAGNET educates young people about the manufacturing industry and the career opportunities it offers. Nearly 1,000 partner and community events have been held at the center since its opening in October 2022. Hundreds of manufacturers annually tap into the consulting resources based at the center to grow their companies. The Heroes of Manufacturing Park is used by local families and has even become a destination playground in the Cleveland region.
In addition to its community anchor role, MAGNET’s building has achieved the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification, underscoring its commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. Awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), this certification highlights the nonprofit’s dedication to green building and sustainable design within the manufacturing sector.
LEED is a premier global green building certification program, providing a framework for efficient, cost-saving green buildings and symbolizing excellence in sustainable design. With fewer than 10,000 similar LEED Silver buildings in the United States, MAGNET’s achievement encompasses various sustainability facets, from innovative design and strategic site selection to resource efficiency and indoor environmental quality.
Dr. Ethan Karp, President & CEO of MAGNET, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment: " At MAGNET, we believe that sustainable manufacturing is not just an aspiration but a responsibility. And it can’t wait for the future, it must be part of the present. Our Manufacturing Innovation, Technology and Job Center stands as a testament to this belief, embodying our commitments to innovation, technology, community and talent development, and leadership.”
Sustainability project highlights include significant reductions in energy and water use, material reuse, waste management, and enhancements in indoor air quality and occupant comfort. "This LEED Silver Certification also reflects Northeast Ohio's growing stature as a center for smart and sustainable manufacturing," added Dr. Karp. "We are proud to lead by example, demonstrating that industrial progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand." MAGNET’s commitment to driving smart manufacturing in Northeast Ohio is outlined in the organization’s Blueprint Progress Report.
