Exploring the Manufacturing Pathway with Coach U Fellows

MAGNET's Bryan Wortmann recently led the Coach U Fellows' Deep Dive into Manufacturing held on October 7, 2024, providing an engaging exploration of the manufacturing sector as a viable career pathway. The afternoon's agenda included insightful presentations from various training providers, notably ACCESS to Manufacturing, presented by Valen C. Willis, MAGNET's Community Outreach Manager and Cuyahoga Community College, presented by Ray Nejadfard, Dean of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering.  These organizations highlighted their programs designed to bridge gaps in employment opportunities and provide essential skills training. The event began with an icebreaker focused on sharing recent client success stories, fostering a collaborative atmosphere among the participants.

The breakout sessions emphasized transferable skills and the strengths-based coaching approach, guiding attendees to recognize the value that job seekers bring beyond what is listed on resumes. Key discussions revolved around identifying these skills in clients and exploring how they can lead to successful careers in manufacturing. Participants had the chance to engage in hands-on activities to experience how it feels to create something tangible, and share insights during debrief sessions, reinforcing the importance of continued learning and support within the coaching community.

A significant takeaway from the day was the emphasis on the local manufacturing landscape, where an abundance of job opportunities exists. Presentations underscored the critical skills needed for entry into the field, including math proficiency, OSHA certification, and practical "shop math." The ACCESS program was highlighted as an effective introduction to manufacturing careers, offering pathways that connect participants with employers and resources. The collaboration with Cuyahoga Community College showcased advanced manufacturing programs, reflecting a commitment to developing a skilled workforce ready to meet the industry's evolving demands. Overall, the event successfully underscored the importance of coaching in navigating the manufacturing sector and preparing clients for meaningful careers.
