The new year is in full swing at MAGNET and we look forward to sharing with you highlights and events each month that exemplify why manufacturing is Northeast Ohio's proud past and our bright future.
ACCESS to Manufacturing: Building Careers and Futures
Since graduating from ACCESS to Manufacturing Careers in March of 2022, not only has Mario Gross found a career as a CNC Machinist, but he was promoted, set up a 401k, contributes to his savings regularly and feels good about providing for his family. "These are things I've only dreamed of," Gross said. "I'm in a position now to have a career, not just a job."
In early 2020, manufacturers and the Workforce Connect Manufacturing Sector Partnership, launched ACCESS. By combining the education of work-readiness skills with technical training and hands-on lessons, ACCESS students graduate prepared to work. Read more about Mario's journey, just one of many incredible stories. If you or someone you know might be interested, contact Nettie King: 216-219-1155.
What Manufacturers Can Expect This Year
Manufacturers have weathered constant challenges over the past few years. With a potential recession looming, MAGNET's President & CEO Ethan Karp suggests that this may be a time of great opportunities for manufacturers. Check out his recent Forbes article where he shared how manufacturers can use technology, innovation and more to make the most of this economic dip.
The Advanced Manufacturing Fund off to a Great Start in 2023
Crain’s Cleveland recently wrote about the two investments the Advanced Manufacturing Fund recently made: one with SweatID, which makes sensors that help athletes understand their hydration needs, and one with Octet Scientific, which manufactures an additive that unlocks the full potential of zinc batteries as an alternative energy source. Previous winners of MAGNET's annual Mspire competition that our New Ventures team leads, SweatID and Octet leveraged these relationships to connect with the AMF team, which continues to be on the lookout for opportunities to work with high potential start-ups. If you are looking to adapt a manufacturing-focused service or offering, reach out to AMF to learn how it can support your efforts!
ACCESS Program Wins National Funding
ACCESS to Manufacturing Careers recently received a grant from WorkRise, the Urban Institute’s research to action network. A research team comprising MAGNET, New Growth Group, PolicyBridge, and Towards Employment will use the grant to examine economic mobility outcomes for Black and White workers who participate in ACCESS. The findings could have significant local and national impact. Stay tuned for results.
Interactive Experience Exposes Students to Manufacturing Careers
The first official manufacturing career experience kicked off in January with a visit from students from Lincoln West High School! Students spent the morning interacting with hands-on manufacturing exhibits and learning about automation by using MAGNET’s collaborative toy car building robot, ending with a thrilling car race!
In partnership with PACE, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District's career readiness program, these experiences at The Manufacturing Innovation, Technology and Job Center aim to help students understand what manufacturing jobs entail, including skills, salaries and the various paths they can take to land these jobs. The program will help MAGNET and local manufacturers build a new pipeline of local talent for the sector. Contact Jennie Becker at jbecker@manufacturingsuccess.org to learn more about our tours.
