Northeast Ohio has made a measurable leap forward on its goal to become a smart manufacturing hub. That’s the conclusion of a new report released by MAGNET. MAKE IT HAPPEN: A Progress Report on the Blueprint for Manufacturing in Northeast Ohio found that in the past two years, the region has improved in four key areas: talent, Industry 4.0 technology, innovation, and leadership. The original Blueprint for Manufacturing in Northeast Ohio was released in June 2021 by a coalition led by MAGNET and including more than 150 manufacturing CEOs and community, civic, nonprofit, and education leaders.

AECO and Octect Scientific Win Big at MAGNET's 2024 Manufacturing Conference MAGNET's 2024 Conference brought together industry leaders to unveil the Make It Better Report Card, focusing on the manufacturing sector's advancements and challenges in the global economy. Sponsored by Bank of America and the Smart Manufacturing Cluster, the event featured in-depth discussions on sustainability, tech innovation, and talent development. Highlights included a keynote by Bank of America's Stephen Juneau on economic trends affecting SMEs, and insights from Lincoln Electric's Steve Sumner on the future of electric vehicles in the region. AECO and Octet Scientific were honored as Manufacturer and Entrepreneur of the Year, respectively, for their significant regional contributions.
DC Hill Day Highlights the Importance of Manufacturing
MAGNET’s President & CEO Ethan Karp and VP of Operations Mike O'Donnell, as well as industry expert and MAGNET board member Joe Majewski, recently took part in the annual DC Hill Day. They joined MEP leaders from around the nation to promote the crucial role of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) to Congress, discuss its vital support for small and medium-sized manufacturers, and request continued funding.
Highlights included discussions on the significance of EV strategy with the NIST team and powerful remarks from U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, who emphasized manufacturing's key role in national success and highlighted MEPs' contribution to saving or creating over 100,000 jobs, underlining manufacturing as America's economic backbone.

ECEC Intern Accolades

The New Ventures team was delighted to host RoadPitch, a traveling pitch competition aimed at connecting black founders with angel investors, at MAGNET during its Midwest tour stop in Cleveland. The event took place on March 12th, with a mix of ten local and traveling founders presenting their ideas to a room filled with angel investors and community supporters. Among them, ARMA, an Ohio-based startup, showcased their innovative silicone sports glove and secured a spot at this year’s Pink and Black Honors. ARMA is collaborating with MAGNET on refining their go-to-market strategy and the engineering of their proprietary technology.
Industry 4.0 Partners
The first Lighthouse Tour of 2024 took place at Great Lakes Growers, who opened the doors of their hydroponic greenhouse to MAGNET, Geauga Growth Partnership (GGP) and local manufacturers. Great Lakes Growers have adopted Industry 4.0 technologies throughout the years to adapt to changing economic, workforce and world forces.
According to owner John Bonner, when planning for advancement, “you have to think incrementally and vet out the elements to see what will work for your business. Talent Success
MAGNET's ACCESS to Manufacturing Careers program recently graduated 20 candidates who completed the three weeks of job readiness skills and technical competencies.
Stacie Woods, an ACCESS graduate, shared her experience of completing the class and obtaining a job at Talan Products. Stacie shared with the class, “I came from prison, where you always think there is no hope. But this program showed me that there is hope. You can change your life. Manufacturing is going to change the world.”

Client Spotlight: Avani
MAGNET New Venturesclient, Avani Enterprizes, LLC, was awarded $200,000 from the Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Start-up Fund(TVSF). The grant will help support further development and commercialization efforts of their innovative patented technology, which converts low-quality plastic waste into high-quality polypropylene. This material is crucial for various commercial applications but is rarely recycled. MAGNET provided support during their application submission through expertise in engineering and refining their value proposition.
Freshwater Cleveland delves into how the Advanced Manufacturing Fund (AMF), a $2 million collaborative effort among MAGNET, JumpStart, and a group of private stakeholders, has seeded a varied portfolio since its establishment in late 2021.
Lincoln Electric’s 3D metal printing solution has been selected by Bechtel Plant Machinery to support large-scale propulsion components for the US Navy. The Cleveland-based company currently operates what is believed to be the world’s largest wire-based 3D metal platform printing platform.
