MAGNET Leverages the Power of the Region from MAGNET: The Manufacturing and Advocacy Network Partner Organizations For 30 years, MAGNET has driven the growth of small- and medium- sized manufacturers in Northeast Ohio. Our partner organizations, which include the City of Cleveland, JumpStart, BioEnterprise, WIRE-Net, Team NEO, and Cuyahoga County, help us to best serve these manufacturers and provide expertise in a wide range of areas. For example, BioEnterprise grows healthcare companies and commercializes bioscience technologies, while JumpStart accelerates the success of entrepreneurs. With this powerful partner base, MAGNET can respond to specialized client needs. Federal and State Programs MAGNET often takes on the important role of intermediary. We partner with NASA Glenn, America Makes, LIFT, and Make it in America, and use these partnerships to make services available to local companies. For example, many manufacturers can directly benefit from NASA Glenn’s product development expertise but have no channel through which to access it. MAGNET facilitates local events and programs that feature NASA and bring their resources right to manufacturers. Through our intermediary role, we connect manufacturers to the tools they need to grow. Private Philanthropy MAGNET uses both traditional fee-for-service and nontraditional performance based models of compensation. Since our
MAGNET is excited to partner with Stark County to promote and strengthen the county’s manufacturing sector. As a grant recipient of the Stark Community Foundation, MAGNET is positioned to deepen its already substantial presence in Stark County. MAGNET currently provides services to Stark County based companies including Coastal Pet Products, Imperial Technologies, M. Conley Company, and Sancap Liner Technology, Inc. Additionally, MAGNET is a strong partner of Stark State, assisting with new initiatives, apprenticeships, internships, and workplace learning programs. With the Stark Community Foundation grant, MAGNET’s impact on the region will only increase. MAGNET will do a "deep dive" into the county, engaging manufacturers in discussion about how to best address their challenges. Our conversations with Stark County manufacturers will focus on small- to medium- sized manufacturers, our ideal client profile, in order to strengthen the wider economy. The grant will allow us to strengthen our program and workshop offerings, most notably our Growth Workshop, extending opportunities to more Stark County manufacturers. Additionally, the grant will allow us to establish greater access between Stark County and MAGNET’s large network of partners. These partners, ranging from Stark State to NASA Glenn, are a tremendous resource to manufacturers seeking to grow. MAGNET
MAGNET is proud to partner with The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC)’s Materials + Economy + Energy + Environment (ME3) program to provide "lean and green" technical services to local manufacturers. Recently, these joint services gave extensive help to Momentive Performance Materials’ Willoughby location, a quartz and ceramic material manufacturing plant. MAGNET conducted an efficiency review at the Willoughby plant in early 2014 to reduce the plant’s energy consumption and maintenance costs. From this review, Momentive identified improvements in lighting efficiency and water consumption that could result in $50,000 in savings. Additionally, a waste stream mapping (WSM) exercise showed other potential savings of $50,000 by using the 4 R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) at the plant. As these money saving methods have been implemented, a case study titled "ME3 Spotlight: Momentive Performance Materials Inc." illustrates the glowing results in Momentive’s Willoughby and Newark, OH facilities. You can also read about the ME3 program’s impact upon 14 Ohio manufacturing facilities, saving a combined projected total of more than $800,000 in costs for local businesses. Though ME3 concluded this past April, MAGNET is available year-round to provide the same consultations that helped Momentive increase efficiency and savings. For more on MAGNET’s

The Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network is proud to receive a $400,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation in the foundation’s effort to fill local jobs in high-growth sectors with properly credentialed workers. Along with the foundation’s $325,000 grant to the non-profit economic development organization Wire-Net, these grant monies will be used for the launch of the Urban Growth Agenda. The program is designed to help the growth of 25 promising small to midsize manufacturing companies in the area and to create and preserve jobs in Cleveland’s urban core. An apprenticeship consortium will be created, beginning with six companies, and the Urban Growth Agenda will work with Max Hayes High School to develop three pre-apprenticeship pathways. MAGNET looks forward to continue supporting Ohio manufacturing in impactful ways. Be sure to check back for more updates on the Urban Growth Agenda and how MAGNET continues to affect progress in NEO!
