One of the biggest challenges in the manufacturing world today is conveying the benefits of manufacturing jobs to current students – a message necessary for increasing interest and closing the skills gap in the manufacturing sector.
As a partner of Ohio Dream It. Do It., MAGNET works to connect current manufacturers and educators with students interested in the manufacturing field, with the goal of engaging and inspiring the next generation.
What does this have to do with our work? In the process of designing their robot, the Beaumont robotics team needed guidance and access to manufacturing parts.
The team reached out to us, and we in turn introduced the team to Talan Products. Talan, a metal stamping and manufacturing company, mentored and supported the team as it developed its robot.
The resulting product, needless to say, was innovative and impressive. We’d like to congratulate the Beaumont robotics team on their work – they should be proud of their accomplishments.
MAGNET’s interaction with Beaumont students and Talan Products illustrates the important role we play in engaging manufacturers and students. The best way for students to discover their passion for manufacturing is through hands-on work, and the best way for them to access hands-on work is by interacting with established manufacturers.
It works the other way, too: established manufacturers gain talented and committed students who will enter their field by allowing them to experience the job firsthand. As the “middle man,” MAGNET creates the bonds between manufacturers and prospective students which will support a thriving manufacturing sector as students enter the workforce.

Single Minute Exchange of Dies, or SMED, is a process for reducing the time it takes to do equipment changeovers. Using the principles of SMED you should be able to perform any changeover in your facility in under 10 minutes! The SMED process is simple – convert as many changeover steps as possible to “external”, meaning they are done while your equipment is still RUNNING, while simplifying and streamlining the remaining steps. Doing this alone will help you achieve 40% to 50% greater efficiency. Once the “low hanging fruit” is gone, you can still reduce setup times another 20% by practicing more advanced SMED principles.
