MAGNET welcomes Cleveland Hts. Univ. Hts. Students
In 2009, Yvonne Schiffer, the Engineering Technology teacher at Cleveland Heights High School (CHHS) reached out to MAGNET through our ambassador program to provide resources and opportunities for her junior and senior engineering technology classes.
Since then, CHHS classes have participated in several distance-learning programs, and participated in an ideation session with MAGNET senior engineers, among other activities. In December, three CHHS seniors visited the MAGNET Manufacturing Innovation Center to shadow Aaron Marshall and Mike Keller from MAGNET’s Product Design and Development team.
During the visit, Marshall, Keller and MAGNET’s design interns showed CHHS students Morgan Clement, Alex Fiala and David Schellenberg the world of industrial design and mechanical engineering through real-world applications.
The CHHS students even had a chance to see how the engineers use industrial design software Pro-E and made their own 3-D prototype models on MAGNET’s FDM rapid prototyping 3-D printer.

Why does it take a NASCAR pit crew only 15 seconds to change four car tires when it takes people like you and me minutes? The answer is simple SMED. Single Minute Exchange of Dies, or SMED, is a process for reducing the time it takes to do equipment changeovers. Using the principles of SMED you should be able to perform any changeover in your facility in under 10 minutes! The SMED process is simple – convert as many changeover steps as possible to “external”, meaning they are done while your equipment is still RUNNING, while simplifying and streamlining the remaining steps. Doing this alone will help you achieve 40% to 50% greater efficiency. Once the “low hanging fruit” is gone, you can still reduce setup times another 20% by practicing more advanced SMED principles.
