Different Questions to Develop your Workforce

July 14, 2015 by MAGNET Ohio

Every company leader has questions about how to develop and improve their workforce, but many aren’t sure what those questions are. Northeast Ohio manufacturers face a common yet multifaceted problem of hiring and retaining quality talent for the long-term. One way to confront this problem is by looking through the scope of your human resources department. Peter Cappelli, author of the Harvard Business Review article, "Why We Love to Hate HR…and What HR Can Do About It," recently sat down for an interview discussing the challenges facing human resource departments in American business today. As you listen to Capelli examine these challenges, questions about your own workforce may come up, such as: • How can you demonstrate the ROI and cost-effectiveness of certain hiring practices and policies (e.g. bonuses)? • How do you overcome "nagging" and persuade your company to take performance reviews and career development more seriously across the board? • When should you hire contract workers and when should you hire from within? • If you contract your workers, are you managing them properly? These questions and more will be addressed at MAGNET’s upcoming event, "Develop Your Workforce for Growth," on Thursday, Aug. 6 at the Holden University

MAGNET offered three important sessions over the course of the conference. In the first session, Growth Advisors Michael O’Donnell and Mike Kaminski discussed value engineering (VE) and the process of weighing purpose, function, and cost. Attendees were guided through the six-step process of VE to find cost-effective solutions (See Diagram Above). In an example that demonstrated FAST (Function Analysis System Technique), MAGNET streamlined the design of a mousetrap by analyzing for areas of possible cost and efficiency improvement, resulting in strategies such as using scent on the mousetrap rather than bait to decrease cost (See Diagram Below). In the next presentation, Growth Advisors Bob Schmidt and Michael O’Donnell shared insights regarding quality and stability. They focused on extending quality tools from the factory floor

MAGNET Leverages the Power of the Region from MAGNET: The Manufacturing and Advocacy Network Partner Organizations For 30 years, MAGNET has driven the growth of small- and medium- sized manufacturers in Northeast Ohio. Our partner organizations, which include the City of Cleveland, JumpStart, BioEnterprise, WIRE-Net, Team NEO, and Cuyahoga County, help us to best serve these manufacturers and provide expertise in a wide range of areas. For example, BioEnterprise grows healthcare companies and commercializes bioscience technologies, while JumpStart accelerates the success of entrepreneurs. With this powerful partner base, MAGNET can respond to specialized client needs. Federal and State Programs MAGNET often takes on the important role of intermediary. We partner with NASA Glenn, America Makes, LIFT, and Make it in America, and use these partnerships to make services available to local companies. For example, many manufacturers can directly benefit from NASA Glenn’s product development expertise but have no channel through which to access it. MAGNET facilitates local events and programs that feature NASA and bring their resources right to manufacturers. Through our intermediary role, we connect manufacturers to the tools they need to grow.  Private Philanthropy MAGNET uses both traditional fee-for-service and nontraditional performance based models of compensation.
