For the last two years, the recession has forced manufacturers to focus on a single issue—survival. John Schober, MAGNET’s Director of Innovation, introduces PRISM, a new service MAGNET will launch this year that will help manufacturers focus on innovation as the key to long-term growth and success. In 2009, Yvonne Schiffer, the Engineering Technology teacher at Cleveland Heights High School (CHHS) reached out to MAGNET through our ambassador program to provide resources and opportunities for her junior and senior engineering technology classes. Since then, CHHS classes have participated in several distance-learning programs, and participated in an ideation session with MAGNET senior engineers, among other activities. In December, three CHHS seniors visited the MAGNET Manufacturing Innovation Center to shadow Aaron Marshall and Mike Keller from MAGNET’s Product Design and Development team. During the visit, Marshall, Keller and MAGNET’s design interns showed CHHS students Morgan Clement, Alex Fiala and David Schellenberg the world of industrial design and mechanical engineering through real-world applications. The CHHS students even had a chance to see how the engineers use industrial design software Pro-E and made their own 3-D prototype models on MAGNET’s FDM rapid prototyping 3-D printer. MAGNET looks forward to continuing and expanding our relationship with the CHHS engineering program. If your school is interested in partnering with us to provide similar opportunities for your students, please sign up for our Manufacturing Ambassador Program or contact Karen Herpel.
